There are more than 400,000 children in the American foster care system.
The Challenge:
When a child is removed from their home, social workers have the arduous task of identifying extended family members. This manual search process is resource-intensive. As a result, many children are placed in foster or group homes, losing their connection to family and compounding trauma.
My Contributions:
People Search: This feature facilitated the search process for social workers by allowing them to search using parameters. The requests were processed through the Pipl API, which returned a comprehensive list of individuals potentially related to children in foster care. My role was pivotal in creating a visually engaging and user-friendly interface to display the results. I implemented state-of-the-art UX/UI design principles to ensure a seamless experience for the social workers, ultimately aiding in expediting the family identification process.
Family Connections: Originally available via the web platform, I took the initiative to extend this feature to the mobile application developed in React Native. This feature visually represented connections that social workers established between the children in foster care and their potential relatives. In making this transition, I focused on maintaining a high level of usability and aesthetic appeal, ensuring the display of connections was both intuitive and user-friendly. My efforts significantly improved the mobile user experience, enabling social workers to map family connections on the go and expedite a better placement process for children.
